With an excellent record of success at 13+ and 11+ entry to secondary independent schools over many years, Denmead School also offers its pupils extensive opportunities to take part in the broader curriculum of trips away and wide ranging activities.

The two main points of entry are into Kindergarten as a 2½ or 3 year old and as a 7 year old into Year 3. Class sizes are around 20 and from Year 3, English and Maths are taught in half class sets.

Boys in Year 2 at Denmead, and those who sit the assessment for entry into Year 3 from another school, can gain an assured place to Hampton at 11+, on the basis of their performance in this exam. Boys can also gain a place at Hampton via the 10+ exam, or at 11+ when Year 6 children will also sit for a number of other senior schools. Girls leave at the end of Year 2 when they also move on to a number of local independent schools.

Sport in the Prep comprises football, rugby, cross country, cricket and athletics as major disciplines, with other minor ones such as tennis, volleyball and chess included in the wide ranging Extra Curricular Activities programme that operates at lunch time and after school. Matches against other schools are played in all year groups from Year 3 upwards and it is an important target to give all the boys the opportunity of representing the school during the year.

Music and drama are also important aspects of school life with each year group performing in productions during the year.

Recent developments have included the provision of the 30 Apple iBook laptop computers based in the Pre-Prep and a further 25 in the Prep Department in September 2005.

The School enjoys the support of a very active parents’ association that organises a range of events during the year.
