Near Westminster Bridge, this small museum celebrates the life of Florence Nightingale (1820 - 1910).
The famous nurse, known as 'The 'Lady of the Lamp', captured the nation's heart when she tended wounded soldiers during the Crimea War from 1853 to 1856. Nightingale's main achievement was to establish nursing as a profession, and in 1860 she founded the Nightingale Training School for Nurses, at St Thomas's Hospital. The museum uses original documents, photographs and personal memorabilia to illustrate Nightingale's career. Displays record her life and her role in the development of health care and sanitation which she continued until her death at the age of 90. A small cinema shows a 20-minute audio-visual presentation covering Nightingale's life.
