Richmondshire Museum, which was opened in 1978, began in a former joiner's workshop and has gradually grown. Visitors begin their tour in the reconstructed cruck house which houses the museum's collection of domestic bygones. They then move on to the leadmining gallery, this details the industry which flourished in Swaledale and Wensleydale until the end of the last century.

Next is the transport gallery, with its model of Richmond Station, and this leads to the James Herriot vet's surgery set. Beside this is Barker's chemists shop from Catterick Garrison. The tour ends in the Wenham Gallery, which covers the history of the town and district. Here you can see the former village post office from Grinton.

In addition to the main galleries there are two outside displays - a joiner's shop and a forge - as well as needlework and other crafts. Finally there is a shop. The Museum has access for the disabled. .
