Richmond upon Thames, London, Greater London, England
Richmond upon Thames, Greater London

Richmond upon Thames is one of the most attractive of the outer London boroughs, the only one which spans the River Thames. Its boundary extends from Hammersmith Bridge to Hampton Court, comprising areas of Barnes, Richmond, Ham, Petersham, Kew (Kew Gardens), Twickenham, Whitton, Teddington, Hampton Wick and Hampton. The area of the Borough covers 5,868.9 hectares, of which more than 5,000 acres is open space. The area also includes more than 20 miles of riverside, 1,126 listed buildings, 63 designated Conservation Areas, and approximately 230 miles of roadway, including 36 miles of metropolitan roads.

The borough of Richmond was formed in 1965 by the merger of the Middlesex borough of Twickenham with the Surrey boroughs of Richmond upon Thames and Barnes.

Richmond upon Thames is a green and leafy town and it is surrounded by accessible open spaces. To the east and south lies Richmond Park a large area of wild heath and woodland that was first enclosed by Charles I as a hunting park. To the north lie the wide green lawns and playing fields of the Old Deer Park which run down to the River Thames, and beyond it Kew Gardens. On the west, rising above the river are the Terrace Gardens: these gardens were laid out in the 1880s and extended down to the River Thames some 40 years later; the broad gravel walk along the top is earlier and the view west towards Windsor has long been famous.

The heart of Richmond upon Thames is the river. Home to the rich and famous for centuries, from Henry VIII to Jerry Hall, Richmond upon Thames boasts many magnificent houses and gardens. Discover world-renowned Hampton Court Palace and maze, the oldest Tudor palace in England and Kew Gardens, with its three hundred acres containing collections of over 40,000 varieties of plants. Marble Hill House, the Thames-side villa built between 1724-29 for Henrietta Howard, mistress of King George III is also open to visitors Twickenham Rugby Stadium and Museum, the home of English rugby, is located within the borough, as well theatres and art galleries, specialist shopping, and two excellent repertory cinemas. The finest feature of the borough is Richmond Park, with its herds of red and fallow deer. The most magnificent park in the capital, and some of the most attractive countryside in Britain.

The name Richmond upon Thames is deceptive, for in reality Richmond is just one of a dozen or so different towns and villages that make up the borough. Each has its own character, each a rich variety of social and recreational facilities, including specialist shops, top-class restaurants, hotels and riverside pubs, with many of the shopping streets retaining their "old world" village character and charm.

Richmond is approximately ten miles by road from London Heathrow Airport, home of British Airways and approximately 30 miles from London Gatwick Airport. Richmond is also 25 minutes by Train from Waterloo station and easily accessible to London St Pancras Station where Eurostar is based.

Richmond is also well known for its secluded cafés, and its farmers market which takes place on Saturdays 11 to 3. Traders from a wide range of backgrounds come to sell culinary goods such as dairy products, meats, baked goods and vegetables.

Although many Richmond residents look to the City and the West End for their livelihood, the Borough can also boast a thriving commercial life with the traditional retail and publishing businesses flourishing alongside new "high tech" and light industrial developments.

Richmond upon Thames' ancient deer park, the Botanical Gardens at Kew, and the historical buildings ranging from Hampton Court Palace to the Georgian Terraces on Richmond Green, create a unique atmosphere for residents and visitors.

Arts and entertainment have flourished over the centuries, with Richmond now the home for several theatres, a television centre, a film studio and art galleries. The Borough's residents are also inveterate "doers", "joiners" and "organisers" - helping maintain a full calendar of fairs and festivals, and running over 1,000 different local clubs and voluntary groups.

Shopping facilities in Richmond upon Thames are exceptionally varied. Richmond is the largest centre, with many supermarkets and department stores; in contrast, Church Street, Twickenham, is a narrow lane with restaurants, small book and craft shops.

Sports are also very well catered for in Richmond - whether you prefer to spectate or participate. It is hard to think of any other London Borough in which it would be possible to watch Baseball, Rugby Union, Cricket, and even Polo, over the space of a single weekend or which offers better equipped sports centres and clubs, recreation grounds and swimming pools.

Residents in Richmond-upon-Thames would rather see compulsory recycling brought in than a switch to fortnightly residual waste collections.
A survey of residents in the south west London borough, taken as part of a consultation that ended last week found that 72 percent supported a move to make recycling mandatory.
Richmond is already one of the best councils for recycling in London, its recycling rate is currently about 33 percent.
