Canary Wharf Docklands is the semi-official name for an area in the east of London, England, comprising parts of several boroughs (Southwark, Tower Hamlets and Newham) in Greater London. The eponymous docks were formerly part of the Port of London, at one time the world's largest port. They have now been redeveloped principally for commercial and residential use.
Canary Wharf tenants include major banks, such as Credit Suisse, HSBC, Citigroup, Lehman Brothers, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, and Barclays, as well as major news media firms, including The Telegraph, The Independent, Reuters, and the Daily Mirror
Transport links are now excellent with the West End a mere 15-minute hop along the Jubilee Tube Line. The main train stations routing in and out of the Capital (London Bridge and Waterloo) are nearer still. Locally, the DLR also snakes through the Isle of Dogs. The Limehouse Link provides speedily access to and from Canary Wharf by car, and getting out to the motorway network isn't too bad.
Canary Wharf is fun in summer during Wimbledon when massive screens show all the latest action to the crowds and the Canary Wharf Group organises outdoor music concerts in Cabot Square. One night a week (usually Wednesdays), the glass-domed East Wintergarden in Jubilee Park screens movies for free. Cabot Hall hosts regular comedy and live music nights.
Otherwise, the many theatres of London's West End are a 20-minute boat ride up the Thames from Canary Wharf to the Savoy Pier.
Canary Wharf is connected to central London via the Canary Wharf DLR station, opened in 1991, and the extension of the Jubilee Line to Canary Wharf tube station in 2000. A river boat service from Canary Waterside connects Canary Wharf to central London and Greenwich. Heron Quays DLR station is also nearby. London City Airport is a few miles further to the east and can be accessed by DLR, bus, or taxi.
