The sandstone Castle , sitting high above the castellated train station, rests on the site of fortifications that go back a millennium and a half. Today's buildings date mainly from the thirteenth century, although the great architect and engineer Thomas Telford was brought in during the 1780s to shore up the remains and turn the castle into an extravagant private home for local bigwig Sir William Pulteney. It is now home to the dull Shropshire Regimental Museum (Easter-Sept Tues-Sat 10am-5pm, Sun 10am-4pm; Oct-Easter Wed-Sat 10am-4pm; £2), a far less interesting attraction than the annual World Music Day (tel 01743/231142), which takes place here in July and makes the most of the castle's dramatic setting.
