Northampton is situated in the very centre of England, and is famous for its shoe-making past. Nowadays most of the old shoe factories have been replaced with trendy bars and restaurants, but much of the character and historic facades of the buildings remain. As far as shopping goes, you can find all the High Street stores in Abington Street and the Grosvenor Shopping Centre. The large Market Square in the centre of the town, dating back 750 years, surrounded by majestic buildings, is the life and soul of the town, with traders selling their goods six days a week. Northampton has many green spaces, including Abington Park which has a bandstand, an aviary, a café, a museum, a church, lakes and a playground. If you visit the park in the summer you may catch the annual Folk in the Park festival, and also the Northampton Show, with traders stalls and live music.. The famous Racecourse was home to horse racing until 1904, but now every August it hold the Northampton Balloon Festival, attracting thousands of people from all over the world. Another event not to miss is the St Crispin's Street Fair, in October, which dominates the town centre for 2 days with over 100 fairground attractions and white knuckle rides! There are plenty of places to eat and drink in Northampton, where you can find famous names such as Chicago Rock Café, Edwards, Pizza Express and Ask, to name a few. The biggest night club is Time and Envy, but The Lounge , off Abington Street, is very popular with students. If you are looking for a jazz venue, Auntie Ruth's The Black Bottom Club is the place to go, just off George Row in the town centre. You can always find traditional pubs, such as The Fish in Fish Street, and the tiny Shipmans, on the Market Square/Drapery get there early for one of the few seats! For culture vultures, the Victorian Royal Theatre in the Guildhall is a great place to watch plays and the traditional Christmas panto. The Derngate Theatre next to the Royal is a large modern theatre which can seat up to 1500 people, and changes its format according to the event, from boxing matches to classical or pop concerts, to full scale touring West End musicals. About 4 miles out of Northampton, you will find Althorp, the former home of Diana Princess of Wales. You can visit the house and its collection of furniture and sculptures, and also an exhibition centre dedicated to Diana. Whilst you are in the area, pay a visit to pretty Stoke Bruerne, a village about 5 miles south of Northampton alongside the Grand Union Canal. Visit the Canal Museum, take a trip on a narrowboat, or sit in one of the two lovely riverside pubs and watch the world go by.
