| Shepherd's Bush is a district in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham situated 4.9 miles (7.9 km) west of Charing Cross.
Shepherd's Bush is bordered by Hammersmith to the south, Notting Hill to the east, Willesden and Harlesden to the north, and Acton to the west. The area's focal point is Shepherd's Bush Green, a large triangular patch of open grass, of approx 8 acres, surrounded by trees and roads with a couple of tennis courts. Shepherd's Bush is thought to have been named after the area which shepherds were said to use as a meadow. However, it is also thought that it could have been named after someone in the area, because in 1635 the area was recorded as "Sheppards Bush Green". The area is served by Shepherd's Bush, Central Line station and Shepherd's Bush, Hammersmith and City Line station of the London Underground. The stations are situated some five minute walk apart. Other stations in the area include Goldhawk Road on the Hammersmith & City Line and, somewhat further afield, White City and East Acton station on the Central Line. As a result of the current redevelopment work, a new station will be built on the Hammersmith and City Line at the Wood Lane overbridge, between Shepherd's Bush and Latimer Road stations. The station will be positioned east of Wood Lane and north of the line, to reduce the walking distance for those connecting with the Central Line. A new bus station is also under construction. There will also be a station on the West London Extension line, (West London Line) which lies to the east of the site and runs between Clapham Junction and Willesden Junction, sited between Kensington (Olympia) and Willesden Junction. To be called Shepherd's Bush due to open in late 2005/early 2006. The development is due to open in 2007. |
