Chiswick House is a wonderful example of an English Palladian villa. It was built in 1725 by Lord Burlington, and the design was inspired by the architecture and gardens of ancient Rome. Some of the ceiling paintings are by William Kent who also designed the splendid gardens, also are open to the public.

One of the most glorious examples of 18th century British architecture, Chiswick House was designed by the third Earl of Burlington (1694-1753). A triumph of the golden age of landscape gardening, Lord Burlington's summer palace is set in acres of immaculately created park, full of temples, lakes, statues, and greenhouses.

Immortalised by the poet Alexander Pope as embodying the greatness of England, this park is also close to one of the most attractive parts of the Thames, and makes an excellent section of a scenic walk.

Chiswick House garden grounds are set to return to their former splendour after a charitable trust has been established to oversee the restoration, management and protection of the gardens and park.

English heritage and the London Borough of Hounslow have joined to form the Chiswick House and Gardens Trust, which will focus on funding for the proper maintenance and protection of the outstanding Grade I villa and its gardens.

The grounds are seen by many as the birthplace of the English landscape movement. They were designed by William Kent in 1727-9 for Richard Boyle, the third Earl of Burlington. They are considered one of the world's most glorious examples of neo-Classical design, although they have only been open to the public since 1929.
